How To Know If You Should Repair or Replace Your Air Conditioner

When your air conditioner isn’t working properly, your first instinct will be to call someone to repair it. However, in some cases, it may be better to replace the unit altogether than to spend money on repairs.

Common Air Conditioner Problems

should I repair or replace my air conditioner?

Beckwith Heating & Cooling Provides Honest Opinions

Air conditioners can malfunction in several different ways. Perhaps the most common problem occurs when the air conditioner stops cooling the home effectively or stops running altogether.

When this happens, it’s important to call a professional to find the cause of the problem. You may also need to call a professional if the air conditioner stops cooling the home evenly or if it turns off and on repeatedly.

In many cases, the air conditioner will start to show signs of an issue before the problem becomes serious enough to dramatically affect the temperature in your home.

Although the unit may still be cooling your home adequately at this time, it’s best to contact a professional as soon as you notice a change in the way your air conditioner is functioning.

Otherwise, you may be forced to deal with uncomfortable temperatures in your home while waiting for the next available appointment.

Air Conditioner Broken – Repair or Replace?

To determine whether you should repair or replace your air conditioner, follow the tips below:

  1. Consider the age of the air conditioner unit.
If your air conditioner is more than eight to 10 years old, repairing it may not be worth the cost. In these cases, you will most likely have to replace the air conditioner in the near future anyway, so it may be better to go ahead and buy a new unit now. However, if the repair is minor and inexpensive, you may consider keeping your current air conditioner for a few more years.
  2. Consider the cost of the repair.
If the cost of the needed repairs is high, it may be better to spring for a new unit. However, if the work your air conditioner needs don’t cost much and are likely to give it a significantly longer life, or if your unit is relatively new, repair may be the best option.
  3. Evaluate the efficiency of your current air conditioner.
The efficiency of your air conditioner affects your energy bills dramatically. If your current air conditioner has low efficiency and needs an expensive repair, it may be better to purchase a new, more efficient unit. Even though purchasing a new air conditioner may cost more than repairing your old one, the higher efficiency will lower your energy bills, and the air conditioner will pay for itself over time.
  4. Ask the HVAC technician.
If your air conditioner isn’t working properly, you will need to contact an HVAC technician to evaluate the unit and find the problem. If you aren’t sure whether you should repair or replace your air conditioner, ask your HVAC technician what he or she would recommend. A reputable HVAC technician will be able to explain the pros and cons of repairing or replacing the unit so you can make an informed decision.

My fiance and I were in our home the other day and worried that we may need air conditioning repairs done. We are looking into different ways that we can solve this problem and learn why it happened. It is nice to know that a technician will be able to look at the system and explain what went wrong.

I appreciate the advice on getting a new unit instead of paying a lot of money to get the current one repaired. My air conditioner stopped working last week. My family is very tired of being stuck in the heat of the house and is very much ready for it to be repaired. I don’t think it will be work repairing, so I am going to have to look into contractors that can replace it for us.

I do like it when you said that if the repairs that the AC unit needs does not cost much and will ensure that it prolongs its life, then it is good to have it fixed. I am confident that that is the condition of the AC unit. After all, it’s only a couple of years old, and this will be the very first time that it will require repairs. I’ll call a professional right away. Thank you for sharing this info!

It’s great that you’ve mentioned that one should think about air conditioning replacement if the energy bill is dramatically higher than before due its lower efficiency. I don’t have problems with the condition of my unit but I’ve recently noticed that the bill is higher compared to before. I’ll have to get in touch with an HVAC contractor as soon as possible so that I can be guided when it comes to air conditioning replacement and which model is considered to be energy efficient now.

I appreciate what you said about considering the cost of repair versus replacing an AC unit. We just moved into an older house and the air conditioning doesn’t seem like it works that well. We will have to look into services in our area that can come help us fix it up.

Great point about factoring in the energy efficiency of the unit and how it will affect energy bills over the long term. That is solid advice and shows concern for the homeowner’s long-term financial impact versus just the short term.

I really like what you said about considering the age of the air conditioner unit. This is something that I should totally be looking into for my ac unit because it has been giving me problems lately. It would be great to get in touch with an ac service that could take a look at it and let me know if I need a repair soon.
